The Great Jabba – Geektopia Games

The Great Jabba

Minor(s): 2 Gamorrean Guards

This one has been around a long while and it has always been fun.

What does this deck do:  Hits you anywhere on the board with high attacks.  Forces you to discard.  Counters your special card.  Confuses people at Guthrie’s in a legendary way.

Last change:  January 2013.

Ian always wanted Gamorrean Guards, and now Greedo, formerly Jabba’s minor, has his own deck.

2x YOU WEAK-MINDED FOOL
Move an adjacent enemy up to 6 spaces from Jabba. Target player must choose and discard 2 cards.

2x I SHALL ENJOY WATCHING YOU DIE
Choose an opponent to discard 2 cards at random.

2x MY KIND OF SCUM
Move each Gamorrean Guard up to 4 spaces. Then each Gamorrean Guard does 2 damage to one character it can attack.

1x THERE WILL BE NO BARGAIN
Discard up to 4 cards.  For each card discarded, draw a card.

1x YOUR POWERS WON’T WORK ON ME BOY
Play after an opponent plays a special card.  All affects of that card are negated.  Affected opponent draws a card.

Why “The Great Jabba?”: There are many Jabba decks out there so we didn’t want to call ours simply “Jabba”. Calling him “The Great Jabba” is how Ian originally envisioned him.

Themes: Damage from a distance, forced discards
Path to Victory: I SHALL ENJOY WATCHING YOU DIE + CRIMELORD
Strengths: Strong attacks from anywhere on the board, forces opponents to discard
Weaknesses: Mediocre defense, mediocre total attack power
Strategy: Keep enemies away and annoy them to death
Test Level: High
Tier: 2

Inspiration: This was the crimelord long before Star Wars Minis came out with “Crimelord Jabba,” and we’re not sure those guys weren’t reading our stuff. Beyond that, we scoured the web for Jabba decks but couldn’t find one we liked so we made our own.  Since then there have been at least 3 good Jabba decks developed, some with Gamorrean Guards and others with Bib Fortuna.  We had Jabba with Greedo for a long time before finally giving Greedo his own deck.

Playing Jabba: Jabba is similar to Emperor Palpatine, with many cards that can affect you anywhere on the board, which makes him a solid teammate. Your best strategy is stay back with Jabba, using CRIMELORD, I SHALL ENJOY WATCHING YOU DIE and the guards to hurt and annoy your enemies. Use WEAK-MINDED FOOL to keep advancing Jedi away, force discards and keep playing a ranged game. You’re going to want to get something out of your guards, preferably at least one MY KIND OF SCUM, so you might let Jabba take some early damage to protect them. Although Jabba wants to avoid melee combat, he may have to enter the fray to finish opponents off and even with a Brown deck, he’s no slouch.

Playing against Jabba: Beware YOUR POWERS WON’T WORK ON ME BOY try to have a backup plan in case Jabba plays it against your special card. Beyond that, Jabba does annoying things to you from a distance like attack you and force you to discard cards at random so you’ll want to get in attack position. Kill the guards early, and Jabba loses an important part of his offense. It is annoying to get hit with CRIMELORD but you can’t go after Jabba until you have cards to spare since he can make you discard when adjacent.

The DT Duels version was selected for the 10-Year Anniversary Set.

Mike Maloney‘s was 2nd place.

Sultan has a good one, too.

Other good ones as well.
