The deck is pretty cool but playing it I got the feeling they are pretty low in HP, especially considering the charakters.

Feel free to add 1 HP to each of them for your set, but it will make the deck really, really strong. They are already Tier 1B and I don’t think they should be 1A. With another HP each, I think they’d be at the very top.

So I don’t have my own printer to use, I did have a cheap one but color printing was out of the question because of ink cartridge costs. I’ve been using fed ex print which is a little pricy ($.65/color page) but the quality is really nice. I’ve tried increasing the border a bit (I think to the 3 pixel setting) so we’ll see if that works, but I also noticed when printing from Adobe on another printer if I choose the print option “fit” it seemed like the page was oversized so I might try messing around with those options. Haven’t really had a chance to try again.

On any standard inkjet, the color ink cartridges cost a pretty penny, but that’s still a lot cheaper than printing out at FedEx!

I try to use the printers at work as often as I can but I do sometimes resort to the ol’ home printer.

Hi Roman, been a while since I’ve been back here… Haven’t had many people to play the game with but I’m trying to get some new people into it. Thanks for updating the Shaak-Ti deck, I’ll have to give it a try! (also keeping this site up… it’s great)
I’ve got a question about the deck designer program. Whenever I print decks off from PDFs, I have problems aligning it just right. It’s good but not perfect. Some decks I’ve seen have added spaces between the cards on the front side which kind of hides any alignment problems, partly because the back images are larger than the front side. “Is it possible to learn this power?” Or do you have any tips for printing? I think the problem is the image part of the PDF doesn’t sit in the exact middle (slightly too far left, like 1/16 in, ends up being 1/8 between both sides).

Hi Paul, you’re probably better off getting set up at the Wiki: http://epicduels.pbworks.com/w/page/9779461/FrontPage. You can see all the decks out there, and download the Deck Designer software that makes it easy to create .PDFs and Vassal extensions, plus chat with others who can help you put everything together, including myself. See you there!

Hey Roman! Here is Raistlin from Italy 🙂
I received your message. How are you old friend?

I constantly play Epic Duels right now eheheh – I played it just last friday night as an entry level game for a new gamer-girl. She liked it a lot (and played your 4-arms Grievous deck!).

Yes, I stll write boardgames reviews and… my first game is out now: Warstones.
I created it with a good friend and famous italian game-designer (Andrea Chiarvesio… Kingsburg, Olympus, Hyperborea and other games)
You will find it also on Boardgamegeek, here:
    https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/218519/warstones
(hope the link is legal here – if not, remove it)
The game will be available in the USA soon – if all things go in the right way.

Cage Match looks interesting. Tempus fugit here… but I hope to have some spare time to look at it more in depths.

Thank you very much for your message. I’ll never forget you and the others Epic Duels fans.

      Saluti Maurizio!

È bello parlare di nuovo con il mio amico italiano! Congratulazioni per Warstones! Fantastico!

Ok, I’ve used up all of my Italian. I’m delighted to hear that you still play Epic Duels. I would love your feedback on Luke Grand Master and Supreme Leader Snoke!

However, I mainly contacted you about Cage Match, as mixed martial arts has tremendous international appeal, and because you and I seem to have similar taste in games, including the particular flavor of Epic Duels that we like to play. I hope you can find time for Cage Match to play test it, review it and/or help me find distribution in Europe or at least Italy. Let me know what you might be interested in, and if there’s anything I can do to help with Warstones, as I will be talking with game companies in February at the Toy Fair in NYC.

Interesting stuff small as it may be; especially the vassal stuff oddly enough. Whenever I re-make decks in vassal I usually have to put them in the X2100-2500 range to keep them out of everybody’s way (and I’m thinking of setting up my own decks in Y2900 or somewhere crazy like that). I’ll be sure to revisit the Sora Bulq deck and keep trying Grand Master Luke (BTW Master Sweep is legit).
Even though I ain’t in any position to play test it, I still wish you the best of luck with your new game!

Another play test and Luke was just plain beastly in dispensing with Snoke and Dooku, using IWFNY to dismantle Dooku multiple times and using an A8 MASTER SWEEP on 3 enemies at one point. Following that game, I’ve toned down MASTER SWEEP to just one other enemy, reduced him to 1x IWNFY and upped to 2x LEVITATE, as the latter is his weakest card for sure.

I’m debating if his TURNED AGGRESSION is a more useful card as a D4 or a D0, and I actually think he’s more dangerous if it’s a D0, so I’m going back to D4. With D0, Luke can really punish you for attacking him with minors, or make you discard your entire hand (or at least close to it) if you use an A7 on him, and he has enough defense to get away with letting you selectively damage him.

Also, with the benefit of a tough teammate like Luke, I’ve seen Jyn really shine in multiple games. She doesn’t need a 17th hit point, it only raises her floor for the games where she doesn’t get going, but her ceiling is very high when she does get going, so I need to lower her floor a bit with only 16 HP.

    • From roman on Updated SWED Disney decks plus a new dueling game

I saw 2 play tests with Luke, Snoke, Sora Bulq, and Rey.

Luke was awfully tough, almost impossible to bring down. His offense is weak. I saw one game where he got his 2 A7s early and won the game pretty easily. In the second game, it ended up being a draw where Luke had the advantage, but couldn’t find enough damage twice through the deck to end the game outright. He’s very much like original Yoda but a little better, a little more fun. MASTER SWEEP was A6 once, A4 every other time. I think high level opponents would mess him up but I don’t know about that yet. I changed his D4s to D0s to make his deck more interesting – you have to time them right, but they can be devastating, but also devastating to Luke.

The Snoke deck is pretty fun. It actually suits him well in that it’s threatening, but it isn’t really that good. I saw him do 6 damage to Luke at one point with DELUSIONS OF GRANDEUR but for the most part, it’s hard to do more than 2-3 damage with it. Still, if you do 3 with it, 3 times, then 2 with FORCE THROW 3 times, that’s 15 damage. It’s hard to pull off though and he struggles with damage in general. He can keep you at 5 cards but not really below that. Snoke isn’t a bad teammate because of his strong minors and damage from a distance, but he’s not a very strong deck by any means.

Jyn actually looked pretty nasty with 17 HP. She won the first game by playing her A10, reshuffling her draw pile, using the HOPE card to get it again, and playing it again. The second game, she had to discard the A10 when she played her D10 to save herself, but ended up surviving a turn with just 1 HP, enough to kill Sora Bulq on her next turn, a huge deal that eliminated Snoke’s chance to get more than a draw (which he did). With her weak minors and heroic nature, I’m going to leave her at 17 HP.

Sora Bulq didn’t get great draws either game but his cards aren’t great either, requiring a large hand to really be effective. He shouldn’t be great but I’m going to change those A4s back to A5s just to give him more of a game. I like his weak battle droids for sure.

  • From Separatist 18 on Luke Skywalker, Grand Master

I’d be really amused by Porgs with 1 HP each 😀

I haven’t played in awhile, and this is more just me being in the mood to be creative than anything else, I certainly haven’t playtested this at all. But I’m thinking I like the idea for this Luke of combining some illusion type attacks that actually hurt you in some way if you defend against them, with some standard middling power attacks that are can be a pain if you don’t block them. I’m not crazy with IWNFY in this deck either.

So here’s my suggestion, obviously you don’t have to use it but just for fun.

    Luke, 15 HP, Green Deck

Porgs, Weak Melee Deck, 1 HP

    Luke Talent Cards

x3 Illusionary Strike- A0 After resolving this attack, if the attack is defended against, the defending character receives 3 damage. (Alternatively “must choose and discard 3 cards.”)

x3 Piercing Blade- A4 If the attack is not blocked, the attack value is 6.

x2 Battle Plan- Move Luke Skywalker and each Porg up to 4 spaces each. Draw a Card.

x2 Jedi Attack- A5 After attacking, you may move Luke up to 5 spaces.

x1 Astral Projection- D* Luke takes no damage from the attack. Then move Luke to any open space.

x1 Porg Invasion- Each Porg does 1 damage to each enemy character he is in position to attack.

Porg Invasion is, of course, a joke and could be replaced either with your original Force Mastery card, or something else 🙂 .

Even after making some tweaks, Luke is killing it in every play test. I’m going to try replacing FORCE CONTROL with your ILLUSIONARY STRIKE.

      • From Separatist 18 on Luke Skywalker, Grand Master

I don’t know if the change was intentional (and if so its fine of course) but the version of Illusionary Strike depended on the defender actually playing a defense card for it to do damage, in other words you could “call Luke’s bluff” by not defending and it would just be a wasted attack. Your version does the DD whether the attack is defended against or not.

        Go to comment
        • From roman on Luke Skywalker, Grand Master

I intentionally have it do 3 DD either way because Luke needs the damage output. 3 discards would be a better fit with the discarding theme of his deck but I think he’d be too strong.

          Go to comment
    • From roman on Luke Skywalker, Grand Master

I worry that Luke lacks killing power. MASTER SWEEP could be an A14, but it will be A6 or even A4 much of the time, and other than that, he just has a green deck and weak minors. I probably need to cap MASTER SWEEP and give him something else to hit with, like your ILLUSIONARY STRIKE card or something similar.

  • From Separatist 18 on Supreme Leader Snoke

I think something like the opponent must choose and discard 3 would actually be stronger in this deck, but that also doesn’t fit the ability very well. Maybe “Choose an opponent, and look at that opponents hand. Choose 3 cards for them to discard, but they can choose 2 of those 3 to put back into their hand at the end of your turn.”

But then, I realize I’m sort of thinking about ways to make the combo work as well as possible, and there’s such a thing as working too well.

    • From roman on Supreme Leader Snoke

I upped it to choosing 2 cards, then tweaked FORCE THROW, so he’s overall a little stronger now. I really don’t think he’s Tier 1 though. He’s just not that dangerous nor that hard to kill.

It fits his character and it fits the theme of the deck and it’s intentionally weaker than INSIGHT so I don’t think it’s a problem, but I’m open to other ideas.

If it proves to still be too weak, you could add a Gain Power type card instead of immobilize, but if the power is where you want it, this deck at least looks like fun to play.

  • From Separatist 18 on Supreme Leader Snoke

Actually I have a better idea, though I don’t know what you’d call it, and it might require rebuilding the deck to a certain extent. A card that does 1 damage to someone for each card more than them you have could work well with Mind-Strip, and I think someone on the forums used that idea before (I think Hags888 used it for a firefly deck.)

  • From Separatist 18 on Supreme Leader Snoke

One thing I just noticed looking through this deck again, he does have 15 DD.

I dunno if that’s too much (Vader only has 14.) But if that is too much, you could turn Force Throw into a type of unlimited range force push (Move any character to any open space. That character receives 1 damage.) That choice would reduce the DD to 12. I dunno if that would be necessary, but just a thought if 15 was deemed too much.
