Yeah, we have the Imperial Officer and 4 Storm Troopers deck, have you played it? It’s a laugh, but we only play it once in a while. 5 shooters barely works, I think 5 melee types would be extremely clunky, and would be a better fit for weaker characters than the PGs.
Yeah, I’ve played the Imperial Officer deck. A lot actually, although not recently. I remember seeing someone on the forums suggesting a 5 character Nazgul deck to go along with The Witch King (and 2 Nazgul) and Khamul and that way get all The Nine in the set.
The one good thing about a 4 PG deck is that apparently the eight guards are divided into pairs who each use the same weapon. Having 4 allows you to have all the weapons represented, although I’m not sure if you could build a deck around that concept.
A 4-character melee deck might work. The Uruk-hai Army deck is an example, and it works ok.
Why don’t you give that one a try? I and others will help you figure it out. Use the basic deck from the Nazgul deck. 7 HP each. Give them 3x offense, 3x movement and 2x defense, all of which power up if the guard is next to his “pair”. 1-2 big attacks (at least A6) that they can use even if all the others are killed off. Perhaps healing or even bringing a dead one back.
So, after playing this version of the deck for awhile, I have to say: 13 HP with a Brown deck is simply way, way too weak for a melee major. If Baze is only going to have 10 HP, Chirrut needs, like 15 or 16 HP at minimum to not just get dunked on immediately. I understand you want them to be weaker than your Jedi/Sith decks, but as is I think Chirrut and Baze don’t measure up to even 4-LOM.
Thanks for the feedback. I haven’t seen this deck a whole lot and it was intended to be weak, and it definitely has played weak, but it was also intended to be at about the level of the Tier 3B bounty hunter decks. 4-LOM and IG-88 each have have 14 HP and their minors have 10 and 11 HP, respectively. If Baze is 10 HP, Chirrut probably needs at least 14 HP to be on their level, maybe 15. I’ll adjust to 15 and see how that goes, if he’s a little better than IG-88 and 4-LOM, that’s ok, as long as they’re still Tier 3B. You can play him with 16 HP if you want, but that’s stronger than I want him to be.
Do you have any opinions one way or the other on the idea of giving the Praetorian Guards talent cards? I know generic minors don’t ordinarily get talent cards, but these guys honestly do more actual dueling in the films than Snoke does and honestly hold their own (though they ultimately do not make it) against two major characters (Rey and Kylo Ren.)
If you were to give them some power combats, it would allow you to avoid the Emperor-like all specials deck if you wanted to avoid that without giving Snoke attack cards of his own (a choice I’d agree with.) It would also give you a different sort of administrator type deck.
I think Snoke looks strong enough to do most of the dueling on his own. Whatever his minors are, I wouldn’t want them to have any talent cards, but I’ll consider your idea if nothing else comes together for him.
Glad you’re taking a look at my Phasma deck. =) I do think of any of the films, this is the least Duels-friendly because it’s philosophy is very much about deconstructing the Jedi as heroes. That said, it also has one of the coolest fight scenes in series history.
I know you were joking about Rey and Kylo but honestly doing an Obi-Wan and Anakin deck style deck with them just to recreate that moment would be worth it. And I fulky support the Praetorian Guard idea; they’ve raised the bar for faceless mooks.
And Hux is a joke because he’s a space nazi and doesn’t deserve anything but humiliation and disgrace.
I’m trying to think of a mechanic that would reflect Hux’s character in TLJ; an easily tricked and bullied buffoon who is a threat by merit of the gargantuan firepower at his beck and call and nothing else. (He acts as *something* of a voice of reason in the final battle, but that’s mostly just because of Kylo’s raging obsession with destroying the Falcon and Luke interfering so heavily with the battle plan; Hux may have more tactical smarts than Kylo, but that’s not saying much in the first place *and* Kylo just chokes him into submission whenever he tries to go against Kylo’s command with anything more than a suggestion.)
I’m struggling to think of something, however. Maybe it will come to me in time, but I’ll likely much sooner be putting out decks for Finn/Rose, Poe/BB-8, Kylo and assorted weirdos from other Canon/Legends material than I will be putting out anything for Hux, so… I suppose that’ll be something for other people to take a crack if they care.
I’ll definitely have to concur on this being the least Duels-friendly movie thus far; only one new character was introduced who really inspires card ideas (Rose, who has several moments that could translate fairly well into cards for a Finn/Rose deck), and many of the returning characters prove, well, less than epic (deliberately so). It makes for a good, interesting movie, in my opinion, but not much that would directly translate into a game about people engaging in Epic Duels (besides the incredible throne room fight, which might be my new favorite Star Wars fight, especially if we’re only taking the movies into account; Finn vs Phasma was cool too, but real short, and Kylo vs Luke wasn’t *really* a fight, in spite of great it was).
I do hope someone makes good maps for Snoke’s Throne Room and Crait (and maybe Canto Bight) soon.
Little nitpick in the page description; he is shown using Lightning in his first scene in TLJ, when Kylo gets pissed off and tries to draw his saber. Snoke even bounces the lightning off the ground rather than directly aiming at Kylo. Not saying he needs a lightning card in his deck, just wanted to point out that he does use it.
Hey good point, I forgot about that moment. Nonetheless, we have lightning in the Palpatine, Sidious and Dooku decks, and I think we need something more original for this deck. Any ideas? I was going to base it off the Saruman deck but ended up going in a different direction with it.
I think the current minor deck you have is something like the old minor melee deck IIRC, its not minor blue. The 3/2 should be a 4/1 if minor blue is what you want.
Nice catch. That’s actually the assume “Melee Minor” deck in Deck Designer, I do believe that’s an old version of the Melee Minor before Minor Blue basically became the standard. I’ll fix that up in the next draft, as I’m sure this version isn’t final.

You know, now that a Giants set is being proposed, I feel sort of bad for proposing Smaug for the Hobbit expansion. Smaug would really make more sense as a giant character. I just thought it would’ve been a shame that he wouldn’t be included.
Though, you might want another light sided character to go 2 light and two dark, and for that I don’t know who could be included.
Nothing to feel bad about! I put the question to the Yahoo group and they wanted Smaug. Plus, his inclusion allowed the inclusion of Tauriel, who was worth including, at least from a movie perspective. Besides, who knows if a Giants set will ever come to fruition? If not, at least we have a Smaug.
You know, I’ve been meaning to ask you about moving LOTRED off of Yahoo Groups; it’s a good set and it was a shame to see it restricted to a service few people use any more. Happy to see it moved somewhere more accessible!
I’ve also been thinking of making a Sauron deck, simply because people keep asking me why Sauron isn’t in the set when they look at it. I started thinking of a solid idea for it back in August, I just need to sit down and knock it out.
(To be clear, I’m not suggesting that you add my Sauron deck to the set; it’s more for my own purposes than anything else, though I do want to make it fit in the set power-wise while not making it impossible to beat. It’s also gonna be pretty gimmicky, probably not something you’d want to break out every single game.)
Btw, I agree with a gimmicky, VERY powerful deck that wouldn’t be played often.
I’d also consider creating an Isildur & Elendil deck. Design the 2 decks at the same time, kind of the way original Luke and Vader were designed to fight each other. It would need to be very strong in general, but also with the specific Elendil-dies-powering-up-Isildur mechanic that would allow it to defeat Sauron.
Yeah, go for it! Robert made a couple of extra decks on his own as well. It’s supposed to work like SWED — there’s a base set to play with, and anyone/everyone can make his/her own decks to add to it.
If we had a Sauron and a Balrog, we could dig up Robert’s Ents deck. Then we’d just need to add one more for a “Giants” expansion. I can’t think of another oversized character I’d want to include though.
Played Bultar in a couple games recently (a 1v1 and an 3-way FFA), and she’s actually quite fun to play! Fragile, but being able to teleport around the board helps out with that.
Quick question that just occurred to me: let’s say you end your turn by playing BLINK. However, at the start of your next turn, all 3 spaces you marked have ended up occupied by other characters. What happens? This might not be terribly likely to happen, but all the same I would like to know how you would handle this situation.
Cool! It is a fun and unique deck. She’s had some great games.
Interesting question, can’t say I’ve seen that happen. The Bultar player almost always puts one token on a relatively safe spot away from the action. I’d almost have to write two more sentences into the card to cover such a case: Maybe once 2 spots get occupied, nobody may occupy the third spot? I think that would be best. If you allow “adjacent to,” one of the tokens, she could teleport to some 27 different spaces on the board.
If you were to do that, then you could potentially use BLINK to shield a wounded ally from any approaching attackers. So you can try it but I don’t think it will work.
Roman, Not a bad suggestion at all, the Old republic Recruit does look similar. Thank you for your thoughts. I saw that Legion was coming out and would love to try playing that as well. Hopefully the miniatures catch up to the movies, it would be great having options to those characters.
Hi Jeff! Thanks for your interest. I’ve found it to be a solid deck that feels like Jyn.
We’ve reached a point in time where even Star Wars Minis have become a challenge to come by. I had to hit up a friend of a friend. But if you can find them, the “Old Republic Recruit” makes a great Jyn, and was considered a “Common” figure so shouldn’t cost much. Commandos are easy enough to find as well.
As far as miniatures go, Imperial Assault and the upcoming Legion from FFG might, in time, provide some good minis for the newer characters, though both are thus far exclusively OT-focused; to my knowledge, the only FFG game using minis that has content from the new movies is X-Wing, which isn’t exactly helpful for Epic Duels. Still, I can’t imagine they’ll go too much longer before adding in ST content to one of the games; we’re going to be two movies into the ST before too long, and it would be incredibly weird to still only have two of the FFG games (including Destiny) feature content from it at that point.
I honestly need another Star Wars miniatures game like a hole in my head. The Geektopia group still plays SWED and we have fund doing it. The 1670 group still plays SW Minis, which is still great, can be as small or large as you want it to be, and has every character you could ever want to play (fans have made characters from the Disney films). I’ve heard good things about Imperial Assault and Legion looks good but I prefer shorter form tactical combat games anyways like Adrenaline, which I highlight in my GenCon post. I’d be interested in SW games around the new films and characters but the old stuff has already been covered, and covered well, IMO.
This deck looks super cool but I agree with Freaky Mutant Man that it’s pretty hard to read the text of the cards. Do you have a better version without the smudged text?
Thanks for the note, sorry I missed it until now, but I did update the Shaak Ti .pdf and I think whatever issue has been resolved. I’m not sure what happened there, the .PDF looked fine prior to upload but something about that process smudged it. Hope that didn’t deter too many people because this is a really good deck, one we play a lot and always have fun with, sort of a classic tough Jedi deck.
What’s your interpretation on the wording of Weapon Compartment’s “take any combat card” phrasing? Does it apply only to basic combat cards, or can you retrieve a power combat card and put it in an allies hand?
Thanks! Nice to hear one of the weaker decks is a lot of fun. I agree. As mentioned above, he typically gets killed in a hurry but he’s also had some epic games among our group, which is kind of the perfect bounty hunter deck.
just passing by… still love the deck and thought about reprinting it, so I was thinking if there is something I would change today. Do you think it would be a good idea to just slightly increase their power level by changing to a yellow++ and strong+ deck?
Just a personal thing but I don’t like messing with basic decks without a really compelling reason, and if Yellow is good enough for Boba then it’s good enough for IG-88. I’d be a little more lenient in giving Bossk an A5. If anything I might add some Hit Points to one or both.
Thanks! Kind of like with Plo Koon, she’s a stronger deck, which is part of what makes her fun. This particular strong deck has some great tricks though.
Yeah, I get the same feeling from the few times I’ve seen him. The combos are what make him strong, but they’re also what make him fun, so I don’t want to take those away.
I actually think just switching out his minors for weak ones would go a long way towards making him the appropriate power level. I could just give some battle droids or something.
So I changed the Dark Acolytes to less exciting but better balanced Battle Droid Officers, or Battle Droids with 4 HP each.
I also took his FURIOUS ATTACK cards down to A4*. I don’t like him having 2 different types of A4s so perhaps I’ll up TWIN ATTACK to A5 but it makes more sense as it currently is, so I’ve left it alone for now.
He’s weaker but can still potentially do A4 + A5, A4 + A5 in a single turn, if you’re following up from a partner’s previous attacks that’s not quite Maul level, but it’s pretty devastating. I think he’s still likely Tier 2 but at the lower end, which is ideal for him.
Sounds good. Agree on the A4 twice, don’t like that either but don’t have a better idea besides leaving FURIOUS ATTACK at an A5. Increasing TWIN STRIKE makes no sence.
One thing I don’t get though, you mention RISING WHIRLWIND serves to weaken Sora? How is that? Isn’t it a very devestating attack, at least if you are fighting in a crowd.
Thanks for commenting on this little-used deck. As much as I like the Dark Acolytes, they do overpower the deck versus where I want it to be, which is Tier 2B at best.
I could just make Sora himself less powerful but if 2 decks are of equal strength, it’s typically more fun to play a strong major with 2 weak minors, than a weaker major propped up by strong minors.
I have played this a few times and really like the deck. Definately have to play it again in the near future to have a little more insight. It’s been quite a while.
